Those Who Can Do, Those Who Can’t…

Welcome  Please read on to see where I’m going with this quote!  I cannot believe we are already in the last week of July.  Usually during this time of year I’m starting to enter panic/anxiety/dive-in-and-get-it-done mode.  This will be the first year since I was 5 years old (trust me, that was a long time ago) that August has not meant “back to school.”  I never had a break between any of my school experiences.  I went straight from high school to college to my own classroom.  This year is different, but in a good way.  It does indeed feel very different not preparing to go back to school in a couple of weeks. To all of my teaching and school personnel friends gearing up to go back and start fresh,  I salute you!  And you will be in my thoughts and prayers, for I have walked that path with you before, and I know what lies ahead.  You will need every bit of strength you can get!  So today, I have an apple for the teacher, but EVEN BETTER!  Our recipe will be Caramel Apple Oat Bars.

Food For Thought  “Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach.”  As a teacher, I was always greatly offended by this quote, and I’ve heard it often.  As a matter of fact, I CAN DO an awful lot, and a lot of stuff that I CAN DO, others could not do (including a lot of educational administrators, but that’s a different blog topic.)  I CAN teach little squirmy wiggly bodies with the attention span of a gnat how to READ-that’s kind of a big deal!  I CAN grow young minds, increase their love of learning, make them curious about the world they live in, develop their social skills, work on problem solving, and build America’s future.  I think those all qualify as CANS, and I was DOING.  I was doing a lot actually, and burn-out and frustration set in.  I was winning small battles, but I was losing the war.

Then I fell for the lie.  The lie that I teach because I can’t do anything else.  Even though I was miserable in my work situation, I felt stuck.  The only jobs I had ever held were connected to teaching and taking care of little kids.  So when circumstances led me to quit my job, I had no idea what I was capable of doing next.  Now I’ve found out, with the help of God’s wisdom and the support of family and friends, that BECAUSE I was a teacher I CAN DO a lot.  Let’s see, I can multi-task like nobody’s business.  I am patient when tasks get difficult.  I can complete a job or assignment with little or no support.  I’m adaptable to technology (that one has surprised me greatly!)  I can offer advice and guidance to others when it comes to their children’s learning development.  I can communicate with a lot of different types of people.  I can communicate in various modes-verbal, written, non-verbal.  I can respect and support those in similar challenging job situations.  I can create unique ways of engaging people in activities.  It’s starting to sound like a job resume’ around here, so sorry about that!  The point is, we all have different talents and skills and they grow and develop in different, but very important ways, no matter what our job title.  I may not be in a classroom anymore, but I’m still teaching.

When I was a classroom teacher, I often said that if I teach one person one thing every day, I have been successful.  I lost sight of that goal in the past few years.  But I still believe it, and now it is becoming part of my goal at faith-family-food.  Each day, before I hit publish, I pray for that post.  I pray for a lot of things, but one is that my words reach at least one person.  If I can offer encouragement or spiritual enlightenment to one other soul, somewhere, then all of the work behind the scenes is more than worth it.  And teachers, here’s a new quote: “Those who can, do so because a team of teachers worked their tails off to help them learn everything they could while they were in school.”  I hope everyone has a great school year!  Links were verified on 7/24/17 at 4:00 CDT.

Today’s Scriptures  I like these verses.  No one should be ashamed of teaching or made to feel less talented because of that choice of profession, which is the implication of the original quote I shared today.  Hey, teachers, God’s got your back on this!

Romans 12:6-7  “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.  If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.  if it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach…”

James 3:1  “Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.”

2 Timothy 2:15 “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

Today’s Recipe Caramel Apple Oat Bars  This recipe has been tweaked from its original form, which I found in a Pillsbury cookie book that was bought at a checkout stand back in the 90’s!

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups oats
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 jar Caramel sundae topping
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 large apple, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • Heat oven to 350 degrees; spray 9×13 pan with cooking spray.  In large bowl, combine, 2 cups flour, oats, baking soda, and butter.  Press crust mixture into bottom of prepared pan; bake 12 minutes.  In saucepan, combine caramel and 1/4 cup flour, stirring over medium heat until thickened.  Spread chopped apple and pecans over warm base and drizzle caramel mixture over top.  Bake an additional 20 minutes.  Cool at least 30 minutes to allow bars to set before cutting.
