It’s Two For Tuesday! The two recipes I have to share today are related to what I consider to be poor word choice when naming things, including recipes. One of the privileges in writing my own blog is I get to voice my opinions, or in this case, peeves. Food For Thought By now you have probably figured out that I love to cook. I love looking for new recipes in books and online. But I have noticed a recent trend in how people are naming their recipes, one that makes me not want to make the recipes! It seems that every type of recipe these days needs to be “cracked out.” I have seen this term applied to chicken dishes, dips, Christmas candy, even a broccoli salad! For some reason, I don’t like this term. I think it’s because, in my mind, it’s connected to drugs and addiction problems. I assumed this term was being used in food descriptions to imply how addicting it was. So I decided to look up the term “cracked out.” When I did an online search for the term, it was defined as a slang phrase meaning “tired or mentally dazed after excessive drug consumption.” So yes, it does have drug connotations and my dislike of the term is validated. However, I also looked up the term in the Urban Dictionary which provided a long list of what this term has come to mean recently, such as crazy, messed up, insane, weird, or strange. So why can’t we just call it “crazy good chicken” or some other similar words. Well, possibly someone else might be offended by the use of “crazy” or “insane” to describe a recipe when mental health is no laughing matter. Maybe I’m just too sensitive to the subject, but when I see things labeled with this name on Pinterest or Facebook, I scroll right on past. The thing is, most of these recipes that have been titled “cracked out” are actually the same recipe somewhere else under a different, and in my opinion, more wholesome name.
“Cracked out” isn’t the only term describing food that bothers me. The other term I have seen is the “slutty” brownies (or cookies or cakes, etc.) recipe. Again, I decided to double check my word meaning to see if I was missing something. One source defined “slutty” as “casual with sexual partners, promiscuous, or having low standards of cleanliness.” The first two I have heard, but I didn’t know about that third one. At any rate, I don’t think I want any of these describing the food I’m about to eat! I also looked up “promiscuous,” which is most often defined as “sexually indiscriminate,” but I also found, far down on the list of descriptors, where it can also mean “casual approach.” That was the closest I could get to wanting to associate these words with my food choices…taking a “casual approach” to the food I’m about to eat. “Casual” could possibly describe this dessert concoction containing chocolate chip cookies, Oreo cookies, brownies, and fudge sauce! But again I was able to find the same recipe with much less offensive titles elsewhere, such as “the ultimate” brownies and “just got dumped by my boyfriend” brownies. I hesitate in calling someone, or something, “slutty.” It just doesn’t sound very nice.
Now, having said all this, I don’t want you to think I am judging you if you make or share a recipe that has “cracked out” or “slutty” in the title. If it doesn’t bother you, go ahead. In any case, I’m in no place to judge, considering there have been times and moments in my life when I have certainly been guilty of using less-than-wholesome language! But I’ve really been trying to work on this! I’m working on limiting the amount of unwholesome talk that is entering my ears and exiting my mouth. Just the other night, my husband and I turned off a movie after about 10 minutes because the language was wretched! Everyone seems to be getting so casual with the words and slang they use, it’s easy to become desensitized. But I don’t want that for me or my family. I want our ears to prickle when we hear something we know is inappropriate. I want our minds to stay sharp and clear to what is right and what is wrong. I am a work in progress, but every little step can lead to a big stand.
Today’s Scriptures I have spent quite a bit of time in the Word studying about wholesome talk, because I have known full-well that this is an area I needed to improve in my own life. Here are a few of my favorite verses that help me with my struggle to speak what is true and noble.
Ephesians 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Ephesians 5:3-4 “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.”
Proverbs 15:2-4 “The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”
Today’s Recipes So I did a little “comparison shopping” regarding the recipes with the names mentioned above and looked for similar recipes that had less dramatic names. For example, there are MANY recipes online for “cracked out chicken,” but I like the recipe at sixsistersstuff.com for Slow Cooker Chicken Bacon Ranch. Same idea, without the dramatic title. I have my tweaked version of this recipe to share today. The other recipe I wanted to “tame” was for the slutty brownies. Most of the recipes I looked up contained the same basic four ingredients…chocolate chip cookie dough, Oreo cookies, brownie batter, and hot fudge sauce. Kevin and Amanda had a version of this they just called “Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie and Oreo Fudgy Brownies.” Enough said! So here you go, all the yummy, without the drama!
Slow Cooker Cheesy Bacon Ranch Chicken for Sandwiches (serves 8)
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 pkg Ranch dressing mix
- 1 8-oz block cream cheese
- 1 cup Miracle Whip
- 1 8-oz pkg shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 3-oz pkg Hormel REAL crumbled bacon (we liked the black pepper variety)
- 1 pkg 8-count Onion rolls (or any other type of sandwich buns)
Spray large slow cooker with nonstick spray. Place chicken breasts in cooker, topping with ranch dressing powder and cubed cream cheese. Cook on low 5-6 hours. When chicken is cooked, shred with forks and add Miracle Whip, cheese, and crumbled bacon. Stir all of this together and continue to cook on low for 20 minutes. Serve on sandwich rolls or buns.
Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie Oreo Brownie Sundae
- 2 sticks butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 1/4 cups flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 12-oz pkg semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 32 Double Stuff Oreo cookies
- 1 Ghiradelli Triple Chocolate Brownie mix, prepared according to package directions
- 1 jar hot fudge sauce
- 1 carton vanilla ice cream
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9×13 pan (deep dish is preferred!) with nonstick cooking spray. Using electric mixer, cream butter and sugars together. Add eggs and vanilla; mix until blended. In separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to butter mixture and beat until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips. Spread cookie dough in bottom of prepared pan. Place Oreos on top of cookie dough, pressing slightly (my pan held 4×8 rows of Oreos, your pan may hold a little more or less.) Pour prepared brownie batter over cookies. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes. Remove foil and continue to bake another 25-30 minutes. Allow brownies to cool 15-20 minutes. Cut into bars and serve with vanilla ice cream and warmed hot fudge sauce.
