Does Wisdom Really Come with Age?

As I am diving into my forties, I’ve been asking myself this very question, does wisdom come with age? Well, I don’t see how it could not! I have had a lifetime of lessons and experiences, both good and bad, to draw from, so I should be learning more than a few things along the way.

I have learned a lot and I try to take those lessons and apply them to my life. We learn from our mistakes to prevent repeating them, right? But wisdom isn’t the only thing that comes with age.

Food For Thought

I have found myself in the category with thousands, maybe even millions of others, who have experienced a mid-life crisis. My crisis, thankfully, didn’t involve an affair or racking up thousands in debt. My crisis looked like leaving a career in education after 18 years and becoming a “writer.”

I think a lot of us experience these crises because we expect that wisdom we’ve gained to ward off any future complications. With all the lessons we’ve been learning, life should be getting easier. Well, you would think. But every age and stage of life brings along its own set of complications and challenges. Sometimes change in and of itself is where we start our crisis. That’s familiar to me as I felt I couldn’t keep up with the rapidly changing demands of teachers in a public classroom.

Change is not the only challenge we face, though. With age, we also experience failures and regrets. Now, if you’ve lived your life free of failures and regrets, we may need to talk. I’m not sure if it’s possible to reach middle age without experiencing both of these, at least to some degree.

These failures and regrets come from unrealized hopes and dreams or plans that went awry. Oh, I most definitely can relate to both of these issues. I failed to retire from a long teaching career. I just didn’t have ten more years in me. I failed to keep the weight off I worked so hard to lose. I failed to stick with my running program that worked so well for me for five years. Thus far, I have failed to achieve a workable income off my writings. And I failed to keep God close to me when it mattered most.

So many of the difficulties I experienced through my thirties in my career, mental health, and physical health, I believe would have gone differently had I chose to keep God the focus of my life. But I did not. Even though I knew better, even though deep down I knew I didn’t like the person I was becoming, I kept pushing God out of my life. I was too busy. I was too focused on worldly gain.

Well, let me tell you, the best wisdom I’ve achieved in my past few years is NEVER WALK AWAY FROM GOD. My life is going to be hard. Fortunately, I don’t feel like I’m in crisis-mode anymore, but my life hasn’t suddenly turned to all rainbows and kittens and sunshine, either. But things are so much easier to face, whether health concerns, financial struggles, or social pressure from peers (yes, that still happens, even in middle age!), if I allow God to walk beside me on this journey.

I say “allow” because it’s really up to us if we let God carry us along our journey. He’s always able and willing. He’s always near. He won’t give up on you, either. So, it’s really our choice, you know, that whole “free will” thing! We can choose to walk with God, through all the ages and stages, and have His comfort, protection, and peace. Or, we can choose to walk ALONE, in the cold silence without hope.

Of all the lessons I’ve learned, the most important one is accepting God as my Father and allowing Him to guide and direct me through the struggles and the celebrations, even through the boring and mundane. I will grow old now, but one day, I will be renewed like the youth of the eagles!

Now, wisdom says, is it really a crisis at all, if it brought me and my family closer to God? Is it a crisis if I have reevaluated my priorities? It’s no crisis at all if I’m listening and following God in my life. Thank you, God, for the wisdom, Amen!

It is the time of year when people are coming together for brunch. Easter, Mother’s Day, and Bridal showers are all occasions to get together for a late morning meal and happy memories. I don’t know about you, but I simply must have at least one savory bread and one sweet bread to offer for a brunch meal. Today, I’m sharing two savory cheese bread options, both quick and simple. For sweet bread choices, be sure to check the Recipes archives and search under “breads” or “breakfasts.”

These breads are very versatile. They go just as well with a simple soup supper or grab and go breakfast or lunch as for a brunch table. The Cheddar Cheese Bread Loaf also makes an elevated grilled sandwich, too!

Cheddar Cheese Bread Loaf (makes 1 loaf, 10-12 slices)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose baking and biscuit mix
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp EACH garlic powder and smoky paprika

Directions

Spray a large loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray. Turn oven to 350 degrees.

Combine all ingredients in large bowl. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.

Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.

Bacon & Cheese Muffins (makes about 2 dozen muffins)

Ingredients

  • 1 12-oz pkg center cut bacon
  • 1 cup sliced green onions
  • salt and pepper
  • 3 cups AP flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 TBS sugar
  • 3 TBS butter
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 TBS Dijon mustard
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Directions

Spray 2 standard 12-cup muffin tins with nonstick cooking spray. Set oven to 375 degrees.

Cook bacon until crisp. Set aside on paper towels to drain. Cook onion in bacon drippings. Season with salt and pepper. Remove onion to paper towel to drain.

In large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and sugar.

Melt butter in microwave safe dish. Stir in milk. Add eggs and Dijon mustard; whisk to combine.

Stir milk mixture into flour mixture until just moistened. Fold cheese into batter. Crumble bacon and add to bowl, along with onions, stirring until just combined.

Place about a 1/4 cup of batter in each muffin cup. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.
